Giants Take Second Straight from JetHawks, 8-3

April 12, 2015 - California League (CalL1) - San Jose Giants News Release

LANCASTER, CA - Tyler Horan hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and the San Jose Giants never looked back en route to an 8-3 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Saturday evening at The Hangar. The win was San Jose's second straight in the series as the Giants improved their early-season record to 2-1.

Ben Turner (3-for-4, 2 2B, RBI) and Rafael Rodriguez (3-for-4, 2B) had three hits apiece to lead a 13-hit San Jose offensive attack. Christian Arroyo (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Jesus Galindo (2-for-5, 2B, RBI) added two hits each while Horan's (1-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) home run was his first of the season.

Four Giants pitchers - Keury Mella, Christian Jones, Jeff Soptic, and Mason McVay - combined to strikeout 15 JetHawks hitters in the contest. Mella fanned seven batters during an impressive four-inning start while Jones (1-0) was credited with his first win of the season.

San Jose jumped out early as Galindo began the game with a double down the left field line. Arroyo then reached when his high pop up was dropped by Lancaster second baseman Jose Fernandez for an error. After Austin Slater grounded out to advance the runners, Horan stepped to the plate and lined a 1-0 pitch from JetHawks starter Evan Grills over the fence in right center for a three-run homer.

The Giants extended their lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the top of the fourth. Rodriguez started the rally with a bloop single to left before Turner smacked a ground-rule double into the right field corner. After Galindo popped out, Arroyo belted a double to the fence in left plating both Rodriguez and Turner for a 5-0 advantage. Slater then ripped a line drive single into left field to score Arroyo to make it 6-0.

Meanwhile, Mella began his outing with three scoreless innings working around a single baserunner in each frame. The San Jose starter struck out one batter in the bottom of the first, struck out the side in the second and then fanned two more JetHawks in the third inning. Lancaster broke through with a run in the bottom of the fourth when J.D. Davis singled with two outs and scored when the next batter, Ronnie Mitchell, doubled to deep right center field. Mella, who completed the bottom of the fourth, finished his outing with five hits allowed and no walks.

The Giants answered in the top of the fifth with two runs of their own. Ryder Jones led off by reaching on a Fernandez fielding miscue - the third error committed by the JetHawks second baseman in the game. With one out, Rodriguez singled before Turner grounded an RBI single down the right field line. Galindo then capped the San Jose scoring for the night with an RBI single of his own to make it 8-1.

Jones (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) entered the game to begin the bottom of the fifth and surrendered a single tally in his first inning of work when James Ramsey delivered a two-out RBI double. However, the Giants reliever limited the damage in the frame before tossing a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth.

Soptic (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) then breezed through a perfect seventh inning before Lancaster pushed across a run in the eighth. With two outs and runners on first and third, Davis produced an RBI double to deep right bringing the JetHawks to within 8-3. But with two more runners in scoring position, Soptic settled down and retired Mitchell on a foul pop out to third ending the inning.

McVay (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) then pitched around a leadoff error and a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to seal the San Joe victory. McVay finished the game with back-to-back strikeouts of Brett Phillips and Ramsey.

Grills (0-1) suffered the loss for Lancaster after yielding six runs (five earned) on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out one.
