San Rafael’s sports and recreation scene is active and a combination of urban recreation and outdoors sports. Between organized adult leagues and general recreational activities, there are a number of choices available for adults looking to participate in recreational sports. With Mount Tam and China Camp State Park nearby, there are many opportunities for hikes, mountain biking, and water sports.
Team Sports
Team sports are a great way to get fitness into your workout routine and to get to know people who share the same interests. In San Rafael, team sports include baseball, volleyball, tennis, bowling, basketball, broomball, cricket, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball and more.

Sunday Recess
San Rafael is close enough to San Francisco for people to join leagues in the city. Sunday Recess is a co-ed multisport adult recreational sports league based in San Francisco. The organization’s activities give adults a place to play sports. Every week, teams gather on the field to face off in fun, all-out games of kickball, dodge ball, flag football, ultimate Frisbee, and soccer. When the games are over, players usually join a casual get together at the local bar.
Billiards
Classic Billiards and The Mayflower Pub in San Rafael offer some great ways to sharpen your pool skills. Classic Billiards offers League play on Mondays and Thursdays.
Marin Bocce Federation
The Marin Bocce Federation is located in Albert Park. There are 10 updated courts (two indoor and eight outdoor) in a beautifully landscaped setting with areas where you can barbecue and set up a picnic.
Leagues can play each night of the week, plus Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Teams are made up of six to ten players.
Hours: Marin Bocce is open to walk-ins mid-March through October. Tuesdays and Fridays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Courts can be rented by the day or by the hour.
The Marin Coed Soccer League
The Marin Coed Soccer League started in 1986 to provide a fun and safe opportunity for recreational adult soccer in Marin. Participation is open to women of high school age (or over) and to men at least 30 years old. Most games are played at the Community Fields at Redwood High School in Larkspur. There are currently 12 teams in the League.
Community Pools
The Terra Linda Community Pool is open for private and group swim lessons for all ages, lap swimming, pool parties, public swimming and more. The pool is open from early April to early October.
The Hamilton Community Pool offers adult swim lanes and times. Private and semi-private lessons are offered for adults of any skill level.
Adventure sports
Hang gliding
If you’ve wanted to fly like a bird (without engines) California Hang Gliding right here in San Rafael is the place for you. The glide with trainer Paris Williams takes you over some of the most stunning views of the bay and the open spaces in Marin County. Detailed instructions and a ride with the instructor keep you safe and able to enjoy the exhilarating ride.
101 Surf Sports
101 Surf Sports is a full service water sports store that offers lessons for stand up paddle, windsurf, kite board, kayak, and surf. You can also take tours conducted by 101 Surf Sports from Marin County to San Francisco on a kayak or as you paddle a stand-up board.
Marin Adventure Boot Camp
For those who want to get fit before going to the outdoors, Marin Adventure Boot Camp offers a four-week outdoor fitness program for women of all ages and fitness levels. Classes cover fitness instruction, nutritional counseling and motivational training.
Strawberry
Strawberry is an unincorporated waterfront community in Marin County that has a recreation community center, athletic facilities, and parks. The Strawberry Recreation District, an independent government agency is responsible for operating and maintaining the SRD recreation community center, athletic facilities, and parks. Other facilities include a gym, tennis courts, swimming pool, spa, sauna, sports fields, parks, dock, and trails.
San Francisco Triathlon Club
The San Francisco Triathlon Club is a not-for-profit charitable organization and a multisport club. San Francisco Tri Club members compete in triathlons, marathons, and other adventure races. The club offers opportunities for everyone, including new-to-the-sport programs, sponsorship benefits, triathlon information resources, and a social and highly energetic team atmosphere for all ages and abilities. It’s ideal for serious triathletes or those looking to learn and train to be one.
